WATCH: Chito Gascon nag sinungaling at siniraan ang Pilipinas sa Geneva Summit

On repression in the Philippines:

"The Philippine case is a case of how quickly… institutions such as rule of law, human rights, separation of powers, can be… undermined if we do not continue to draw the line."

"It is barely 7 months since (Rodrigo Duterte) assumed office… He undertook a relentless strong arm campaign against crime and drugs. It has resulted in close to 7,000 deaths. Two thirds were committed by unknown perpetrators and one third have been killed in the hands of law enforcement. They claim in every single cas it was a self defense case. This program is continuing to this day. There is not let up in this anti-drug, anti-crime campaign. It represents an unprecedented number of killings not since the authoritarian regime - 1,000 people killed each month!"

"If this program continues, we are greatly afraid that violence will spread, and now only criminals will be attacked, but those in opposition to Duterte's policy. Over the weekend, the staunchest opponent of this policy, Senator Leila de Lima, has been charged by the Department of Justice for alleged involvement in drugs. But the evidence that has been presented is actually non-consequential; and we view this to be essentially a political harassment…"

The death of old-school ‘journalism’ proves that democracy is ALIVE in the Philippines

Roles have been reversed. Mainstream “journalists” are now the loud and noisy shills who cry bloody “persecution” and peddle unfounded conspiracies. It is hardly surprising that people nowadays now rely on alternative sources of information. Old school journalists are just too self-important to have decent discussions with.
How does the news media industry old guard respond to this shift in their readership’s behaviour? Not with any form of that decent discussion their readers demand nowadays. By throwing girly tantrums. Maria Ressa leads the charge to discredit the new competition by claiming that “Democracy as we know it is dead.”
“What you’re seeing is exponential growth of propaganda networks that hijack what used to be called democracy.”
The research Ressa and her team produced revealed coordinated social networks deployed to first boost support for Rodrigo Duterte in his 2016 presidential run.
Then, once he’d been elected, they turned their full force on the traditional media.
Ressa, a.k.a. God’s Gift to Filipino Journalism, is the founder of Rappler.com — a Web-only news media site that styles itself as a “social news network”. Since its founding, Ressa has promoted Rappler as the embodiment of the future of journalism and a platform for “uncompromised journalism that inspires smart conversations and ignites a thirst for change.”
Interesting then the way Ressa now responds to the actual change happening today as Filipinos fully embrace social media as a means to consume information and express their views. Rather than show a resolve to compete, Ressa has, instead, resorted to old-styled demagoguery and the use of cliché sloganeering. Whilst bloggers and social media publishers throw themselves into the playing field, Ressa pathetically waxes outrage over the chaos from her ivory tower. Indeed, the way Rappler is dealing with “citizen journalism” and social media chatter today is nothing like the “social news network” it fancies itself to be.
For their parts, the old industry stalwarts are not coming across as good company for wannabe hipster upstarts like Rappler. The Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) and ABS-CBN News find themselves increasingly embattled as their exposure to the ebbs and flows of patronage politics in the Philippines compromises their ability to report news objectively
According to Manila Times columnist Bobi Tiglao, the Inquirer owners were Marcos cronies. Tiglao writes that the Rufino family who are now the biggest single owners of the Inquirer benefitted from favourable terms surrounding use of prime property extended to them by former First Lady Imelda Marcos.
Did the Rufinos’ control of the PDI, one of the two largest newspapers in the country which made them a force to be feared, help in keeping their crony deal secret? Such is the awesome power of the Press.
And to think that PDI chair Marixi Rufino-Prieto at the newspaper’s 30th anniversary celebration said in her speech: “For 30 years, we mustered the courage to expose the ills of society, courage to be the voice of the powerless, courage to stand our ground, no matter how unpopular it is.”

It is unclear, and never reported by the PDI, how the Rufinos got to be the paper’s biggest owner, although this occurred during the fight for the paper’s shares between founder Eugenia Apostol and former Senator Juan Ponce Enrile in the early 1990s.
Giant ABS-CBN News also finds itself in a bind with the renewal of its license to operate broadcasting services at the mercy of politicians’ personal whims. Indeed, ABS-CBN itself has long recognised its precarious position as an entity whose survival depends on earning politicians’ favourable attention.
ABS-CBN’s 25-year franchise expires on March 30, 2020.
A member of the House legislative franchise committee, who declined to be named for lack of authority to speak for the panel, said ABS-CBN had sought the renewal six years before the expiration of its franchise because it didn’t want to risk having to go through the process under an unfriendly administration.
Democracy? Dead? Perhaps democracy — as people like Maria Ressa know it — is. But, really, democracy in its real sense isn’t. Politicians behave the way the system encourages them to behave. When media companies deal with “friendly” administrations, they return the favour by being mum about that friendliness. When the the administration is an “unfriendly” one, the shrill cries of bloody “persecution” erupt. The more important point — that a system where the “friendliness” of its bureaucrats matter to supposedly “objective” news reporters is, in fact, inherently flawed — is missed by a Mile Long (pun intended).

Democracy is not “dead”. It is thriving. Successive governments having had to battle critics and “fake news” is, itself, evidence that the Philippines is more democratic than most democracies. Big corporate media organisations like Rappler, the Inquirer, and ABS-CBN just need to learn to compete in the social media jungle. To do that, they will have to evolve from the lumbering dinosaurs with umbilical cords feeding off oligarchs that they are today, to the fast, nimble, and independent entities that today’s technology-enabled consumers of information demand.

Ateneo Business Professor Nanawagan to IMPEACH VP LENI ROBREDO

Yesterday, our very own VP (though her election is still questionable), Leni Robredo, posted a video message which was intended to be shown today in the Annual meeting of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Austria.

She claimed of a “palit-ulo” scheme being done by the PNP and again mentioned the 7,000+ casualties in our government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign. The claims are both untrue and unverified.

She, being part of the government, should have asked the proper government agencies to verify her claims. The “palit-ulo” is an intelligence strategy to get information from small fish to catch the bigger fish in criminal activities.

On the otherhand, of the 7,000+ deaths recorded by the PNP, only 2,500+ were deaths during police operations and on the balance, only 1/3 are related to the drug trade and the 2/3 due to various and unknown reasons which include among others grudge, riding in tandem, altercations and other reasons other than drugs.

They’ve not mentioned that there were more than 1.1 Million surrenderers, including 80k pushers, and 48k arrests. The issue of illegal drugs is both an issue of law enforcement, as crimes have been committed due to drug use and trade, and rehabilitation. Both are being addressed by the current administration. I should know as I am privy to the information from the PNP and implementation of the drug rehabilitation program.

What she has done should be the last straw. The VP and the rest of the opposition LP have been trying to destabilize our country by false propaganda via international media. They know for a fact that they have lost credibility among majority of the Filipinos.

Their unverified allegations of human rights violations and so-called “ejk” which is non-existent has already taken its toll. We have lost a $434 Million (P20 Billion) grant from the Millennium Challeneg Corp which we could have been used for our anti-poverty programs; the European Union have threatened that we could lose at least 27 trade agreements because of alleged human rights issues (embedded in the trade agreements); and with her video message, without verification and challenge, could affect again our relationship with members of the UN. What she and her cohorts have been doing is tantamount to ECONOMIC SABOTAGE.

It’s time for the majority of the Filipinos to fight back and gain back our integrity from destabilizers.

Section 2 Article XI must be invoked against a pretentious VP in Leni Robredo. She should be impeached for continuously attempting to sabotage our economy constituting “betrayal of public trust”!

Impeach Leni Robredo!!!

Philippine leader unfazed by ICC murder complaint, vows no let-up in drugs war

FILE PHOTO: Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte speaks during a news conference at the presidential palace in Manila, Philippines March 13, 2017. REUTERS/Erik De Castro/File Photo
MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday said he was willing to face the music for his war on drugs and a complaint filed with the International Criminal Court would not stop him pursuing his bloody campaign.
The former prosecutor said he was man who was true to his word, including wiping out drugs, so he would accept the consequences, even if it meant prison, or death.
"I will continue my campaign ... I just stood by with my promise, all other politicians they pay lip service to the problem," he told reporters.
"You want to try to do everything to put me in prison, please go ahead ... if it is my destiny to go to jail then I will go to jail, if somebody will kill me for killing the idiot drug people, so be it, I die."
Thousands of Filipinos have been killed since Duterte unleashed his ferocious campaign nearly 10 months ago. Police say they have killed only in self-defense, and the deaths of other drug dealers and users was down to vigilantes or narcotics gangs silencing potential witnesses.
Human rights groups say official accounts are implausible and accuse Duterte of supporting a campaign of systematic extrajudicial killings by police. The government denies that.
A Philippine lawyer filed a complaint at the ICC on Monday against Duterte and senior officials of mass murder. The 77-page filing said Duterte "repeatedly, unchangingly and continuously" committed crimes against humanity.
The complaint is the first publicly known communication to the ICC against the president and is based on the testimony of two self-confessed hit men who said they had worked under Duterte when he was a mayor, statements from rights groups and media reports, including a Reuters series on the killings. (http://reut.rs/2jPSgSn)
Duterte stood by police, and said he had never given an order to commit murder, but to defend themselves if their lives were at risk.
He dismissed questions about police carrying out extrajudicial killings and appeared to blame criminals for thousands of deaths at the hands of mystery gunmen.
"Of course, who else?" he said.
Duterte also dismissed an editorial in the New York Times on Tuesday that said the ICC should promptly open an investigation into the drugs war. It described Duterte as "a man who must be stopped."
Duterte said it was the newspaper that should be stopped.
"New York Times, assholes, they are assholes," he said.

Philippines’ extrajudicial violence traces roots to Aquino admin according to The New York Times

New York Times article has confirmed what some of us have been saying all along – that the root of the problem in the Philippines that the current government is facing today can be traced to former President Benigno Simeon Aquino. It is funny though how it had to take foreigners to validate what Get Real Post writers have been writing about for six years. This is what they had to say about the previous administration:
But the true roots of the problem can be traced to the administration of Mr. Duterte’s predecessor, Benigno Aquino III. That is because, experts say, the true cause of this kind of extrajudicial violence is the public’s loss of confidence in state institutions and its turning instead to more immediate forms of punishment and control.
Mr. Aquino, elected in 2010 on promises to support the rule of law and human rights, failed to fix the Philippines’ corrupt and ineffective justice system. His administration also faced a series of security-related scandals, including a hostage crisis in Manila in 2010.
And, perhaps most critical, Mr. Aquino was perceived as lazy and soft, unwilling to take the necessary steps to solve the country’s problems.
Frustration with the government’s inability to provide basic security led to rising public demand for new leaders who would take more decisive action to provide security.

The New York Times called former President BS Aquino 'lazy and soft'.
The New York Times called former President BS Aquino ‘lazy and soft’.

It is also ironic that while BS Aquino’s supporters share the New York Times article because it is mostly critical of President Rodrigo Duterte’s policy on illegal drugs, they gloss over the part where the NYT writer blames the former President for his failure to crack down on the drug trade and his failure to fix the slow justice system. BS Aquino’s supporters also turn a blind eye to the fact that the drug problem became an epidemic during his term. His government was given a list of politicians and members of the military and police who were involved in drug trafficking but they just sat on it. They also tolerated the way convicted drug lords continued to operate inside the prison walls.
More importantly, BS Aquino also set a precedent for denying due process to his political enemies, which is why ordinary Filipinos have become frustrated with the Philippines’ justice system. They would now rather take matters into their own hands. This was what I wrote prior to BS Aquino stepping down:
The application of selective justice in the Philippines is the reason why Filipinos are getting increasingly frustrated at the current government. BS Aquino’s Daang Matuwid or so-called “straight path” only works for his friends and allies. No wonder Duterte’s vigilante style of justice has become acceptable to a lot of people. If the justice system is broken anyway, people think it is better to take matters into their own hands. They are tired of politicians like BS Aquino and Mar Roxas who say they are “decent’” but do not have any qualms about destroying people who get in their way.
Corona was never found to be guilty of corruption by a real court. His only offence was in the discrepancy in his Statement of Assets and Liability Net Worth (SALN), which by law, government officials are allowed to correct whenever discrepancies are found. Most public servants would be guilty of that but they are spared from the persecution Corona was subject to under BS Aquino and his minions. BS Aquino keeps bragging about being the first President to impeach a sitting Supreme Court Chief Justice. He couldn’t have done it without the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) and pork barrel funds and a corrupt Congress.
It doesn’t take a genius to understand why majority of Filipinos approve of Duterte’s brand of justice. They waited for six years for BS Aquino to do something about the increasing violence in the country but they were disappointed. The media is only highlighting the killings now but incidence of drive-by shootings had become more brazen in recent years even before Duterte came to power. The people have become angry and helpless reading news about victims of rape, assault and robbery even in broad daylight perpetrated by drug gangs. To a lot of Filipinos, it is better that drug dealers and pushers be dead than innocent people, which is why they do not feel sorry hearing of people dying during police operations or in the hands of unidentified suspects. Some Filipinos even cheer when they find out drug dealers and pushers are killing each other.
People would accuse me of giving the situation my seal of approval. They are wrong. I am merely giving my own observation of what is happening in the country. I saw it coming. I am not entirely surprised that people are dying on the streets. Duterte did warn everyone that he would go after drug traffickers while he was still campaigning. Besides, life has always been cheap in the Philippines. The violence was ignored in the past because it involved mostly the lower classes. It is part of Filipino culture to ignore what is happening to others if it doesn’t involve members of their inner circle of family and friends. In the Filipino vernacular, it is called kanya-kanya. It is only now that there is outrage coming from so-called “civil society” because some members of the upper classes are now getting killed or caught in the middle of Duterte’s war on drugs.
In other words, some folks were in denial there was a problem to begin with. Again, that is the fault of BS Aquino who made people believe everything was under control. He was good at hiding problems or pretending there was none. This is why the news that there were city mayors who were coddling drug lords came as a rude shock to everyone. Even celebrities were not spared in the naming and shaming. If there is one thing positive about Duterte’s drug war, it appears that it doesn’t discriminate or favour anyone, rich or poor. Everyone involved in the drug trade is getting equal treatment.
The New York Times is saying that a culture of vengeful punishment is taking hold in the Philippines. This is nothing new. It has always been like that in the Philippines. It is still a primitive country pretending to be civilised. Most people don’t even understand the concept of rule of law. If they did, they wouldn’t have tolerated how BS Aquino treated his political enemies even back then.

Hitting 3 birds with one stone: Former LP member and lawyer hits Pangilinan, Robredo and Alejano

Former politician and ex-Liberal Party member Atty. Glenn Chong reacted to statements of 'yellow' members Kiko Pangilinan, Leni Robredo and MAGDALO member Gary Alejano about impeachment case against President Duterte.

SEN.

1. Ang pakikialam ng mga hiprokitong politiko ng European Union na palayain si De Lima at mga pagpuna ng mga diumano ay human rights violations;

2. Ang side session ng UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs na target any Pilipinas at ini sponsor ng mga kaalyado ng Liberal Party;

ALEJANO: "Categorically, sinasabi ko walang kinalaman ang Vice President, Liberal Party, or any other political parties or personalities ditto sa among finile."

President Rodrigo Duterte asked a question to his favorite reporter Pia Ranada of Rappler about the alleged corruption practices of some media outlets.

During an ambush interview in Malacañang Palace Thursday, President Rodrigo Duterte seemed embarassed the reporters after he discussed his anger to some media outlets.

He challenged one of the reporters present during the ambush interview Pia Ranada to give her personal opinion on the issues faced by ABS-CBN and Inquirer.

But Ranada refuses to answer because of ” conflict of interest” that made Duterte labeled her as “not filipino”

President Duterte also accused Pia Ranada for writing fake news about him.

Duterte said that the articles of Ranada are full of “speculations”

“Ito ang tumaba na rin. Si Pia (Ranada) sa… Ayan sa kakasulat ng hindi totoo,” Duterte said.

Since last month, President Rodrigo Duterte launched attack against ABS-CBN and Inquirer.

He vowed to block the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN while he said that he will reclaim the former government-owned Inquirer.

CC complaint vs. Duterte bound for trash can, says Lacson

Published April 25, 2017 12:31pm
By KATHRINA CHARMAINE ALVAREZ, GMA News

For submitting a complaint based on testimonies of “polluted sources,” Senator Panfilo Lacson on Tuesday said the complaint filed with the International Criminal Court (ICC) against President Rodrigo Duterte is “dustbin bound.”

In a text message to reporters, Lacson said the complaint filed by lawyer Jude Sabio on Monday was “as good as without merit” as it used as witnesses, confessed hitmen Edgar Matobato and Arturo Lascañas. Sabio is the lawyer of Matobato.

“As the presiding chairman of the Senate investigation that heard Lascañas and Matobato's testimonies, if they are Atty. Sabio's main witnesses against PRRD et al, or worse, the only witnesses, being both polluted sources and a perjured witnesses at that, I am almost certain that the complaint is as good as without merit,” he said.

“Therefore, it's dustbin bound,” said Lacson, chairman of the Senate committee that conducted an investigation on the allegations of Matobato and Lascañas against Duterte.

Both Matobato and Lascañas testified before the Senate public order committee and claimed that Duterte was behind the killings of drug suspects and other criminals in Davao City.

Lacson thinks the filing of the ICC complaint was meant to “embarrass” President Duterte as the Philippines hosts the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit this year.

“Embarrassing our president before world leaders who will be converging in our country for an international summit like the ASEAN is one of the most unpatriotic acts and the worst disservice that one can do to his country,” Lacson said.

Sabio accused Duterte of crimes against humanity over the alleged killings perpetrated by the so-called Davao Death Squad and the current administration’s war on drugs.

Lacson pointed out that the filing of the complaint should first meet at least two basic requirements, that the national courts are “unwilling or unable to prosecute” those accused, or when the United Nations Security Council or individual states refer the case/s to the ICC.

“In order to determine if the ICC will give due course to the complaint filed by Atty Sabio, let us ask ourselves if these requirements or conditions are met, then we can draw our conclusion from there,” Lacson said.

“I would like to believe that it is going to be a tall order, even a disappointment for people who wish that the ICC take jurisdiction over PRRD and other individuals charged in this instant case,” he added.

The office of ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has earlier confirmed receiving the complaint filed by Sabio.

Bensouda's office confirmed to AFP it had "received a communication earlier this morning by an attorney from the Philippines," adding it would "analyze the materials submitted, as appropriate" in line with the tribunal's guiding Rome Statute and make its decision later. — MDM, GMA News

ICC complaint vs. Duterte bound for trash can, says Lacson

Published April 25, 2017 12:31pm By KATHRINA CHARMAINE ALVAREZ, GMA News

Writer Unfolds Alleged Reason Why Leni Can't Resign As VP Even If She Wants

Veteran columnist Jojo Robles unfolded alleged reason why Leni Robredo can't leave her Vice President post using his Facebook account.

In the said Facebook post, Robles said Leni can't because the yellow has invested a lot for her.

"You can demand that Aling Leni resign all you want. But she's not going to even if she really wanted. She can't. There's just so much invested in her by the yellows who can destroy her also..if they want, that she has to simply get with the program," Jojo remarked.

The writer also said that Leni is like the conventional politicians who incurred debts and received favors, and so she can't resign.

On the other hand, Jojo is sympathetic to her. "Her ambition got her to where she is now. And she willingly received funds, favors and other investments that got her this close to the big prize. She can't say that she was forced to do what she did."

Jojo concluded that Leni has no choice other than to deal with the prize of her ambition.

Below is the full Facebook post of Jojo Robles:
THE MARIONETTE. You can demand that Aling Leni resign all you want. But she's not going to, even if she really wanted to.

She can't. There's just so much invested in her by the Yellows -- who can destroy her also, if they want -- that she has to simply get with the program.

Aling Leni is like all those compromised politicians who went before. The deals she made, the debts she incurred, the favors she received to gain high office -- all of them ensure that she will stay the course no matter what.

But I feel no sympathy for her. Her ambition got her to where she is now. And she willingly received the funds, favors and other investments that got her this close to the big prize. She can't say that she was forced to do what she did.

Deal with it, Aling Leni. At this point, you know you have no choice but to continue serving your masters.

And if you fail, they'll find another marionette just like you. They always do.

Saint Cory: A Seriously Blasphemous Sainthood Indeed

John Goodman - AvatarIn a recent Philippine Star column, editor Joanne Rae Ramirez said Fr. Catalino Arevalo – a close friend of the Aquino family – sees no problem with starting the consecration process for Cory since she was a person with “extraordinary Christian virtues.”
BULLSHIT!!
Just the very idea of contemplating former Philippine President Corazon Aquino for Sainthood is a blasphemy to nearly everyone ever canonized before her. She never did anything of worth for her country. She did not lead the Edsa1 disaster as the lying Liberal Party and their historians have led – or rather demanded – you to believe. Rather, she hid under her bed, in a convent somewhere in Cebu.
She ordered the Mendiola Massacre against her own countrymen. In fact, They were the very farmers her thieving family had promised land distributions to decades prior to her entering office. She oversaw the return of the Oligarchy, and did so under the guise of a democracy. And after 30 years. The current state of the Philippines, is her brainchild. A nation more corrupt. Crime ridden. And impoverished than at any other time in its history. And there are actually people stupid enough to even suggest her for Sainthood?
For the sake of argument. Let’s take a look at the 6 year administration of Mrs Aquino. And some of the shit these nitwits seem to enjoy ignoring, so as to further justify her canonization. Between 1986 and 1990, the following occurred:
  • 23,424 individuals had been killed.
  • 229 Barangays, and 207 Sitios (small villages) were affected by 464 Cases of forced evacuations.
  • 20 cases of hamletting, which directly affected 2,306 Individuals and 1,675 Families.
  • 23 Cases of Economic and Food Blockades, affecting 8,925 Families and 427 individuals in 36 Barangays in the countryside. Of these families, 4,024 were victimized in 1990 alone.
Interestingly, the regime of Mrs Aquino, in contrast to the now demonized regime of former President Ferdinand Marcos, presents an equally shocking picture of human rights abuses. From March 1986 to December 1991, the number of warrantless arrests and detention had reached the rather alarming level of 16,000. Including extra-judicial executions in 1,733 of these cases. Of which 189 occurred in 1990 alone. Ironically, at the beginning of her term as President, Cory had stated on record: “I want the Filipino people to suffer, so that they will hate Marcos.”
aquinoFrom a socio economic perspective, the administration of Cory Aquino gave the Philippines more coup attempts than anyone would care to remember. Her economic policies brought in heavy inflation and caused the pesos value to plummet. The communist problem became so big that up until now, the nation is still wasting lives and resources to counter it. Her provisions within the 1987 constitution of allowing party list groups into congress have made redundancy commonplace and have allowed communists who are against democracy to be allotted government funds as congressmen.
Cory may be gone, but her regime – the set of rules, cultural or social norms, etc. that regulate the operation of government and its interactions with society – persists to this day. The outcome of Cory’s regime are its legacy. In short, Cory Aquino “freed” the Filipinos from the tyranny of Marcos and delivered the Filipinos to the tyranny of the Oligarchy. That was not liberation. It was simply transferring the reins of power from a one-man dictatorship to a collective dictatorship.
Yes! I can certainly see how she qualifies for Sainthood.
